Basic Golf Club Fitting -
Affordable Custom Fit Golf Clubs
You can have truly affordable custom
fit golf clubs if you do the basic fitting and building
yourself. You can be your own custom club
fitter which will definitely help you take strokes off of your
game. To begin the process of
having affordable custom fit golf clubs, let me first define an Online
Fitting. You can go to many different places on the
internet to get an Online Fitting, but in my
opinion they don't go quite far enough. Let me tell you why. An
Online Fitting only gives you 3 very
basic things: - A Recommended Shaft Flex -
This is usually based only on your estimated distance that you can hit
a Driver or 5 Iron. The problem with this method is that it
does not take into account the things that you want out of your new
shaft, like distance versus control, your desired trajectory, or if you
want to correct a slice or hook. A recommended shaft flex may
not give you a better shaft than what you are currently
using. It could actually be worse.
- Grip
Size Fitting - This is usually based only on a couple of dimensions on
your hand or even just your glove size. This method of grip
sizing can be effective, but it is not 100% accurate. Every
person holds the club a little differently so just taking a couple of
measurements does not tell the whole story. You really need
to hold onto a few different sized grips to accurately determine which
size you should use.
- Club Length - Again, this is
usually only based on a couple of measurements. There are a
couple of things wrong with this method. One, it does not
take into consideration your stance. This can have a real
effect on club length. Two, it is usually based on a
non-existent standard for lengths. Every manufacturers
standard length driver is different. I have seen standard
length tables putting the driver length anywhere from 43 inches to 45
inches.
An Online Fitting,
the way I see it, just does not do a good enough job at fitting
yourself for golf clubs. There are too many possibilities
that its recommendation might be wrong. It, also, does not
take into consideration the clubhead. In my opinion, you are
not getting affordable custom fit golf clubs with an Online
Fitting. What I call Basic
Club Fitting does not take much more effort on your part,
and will fill in the much needed gaps left by an Online Fitting.
This is really a much better way to have affordable custom fit golf
clubs.
If you want to do just a Basic
Fitting there are 4 things that I recommend you fit for;
shaft, head, grip, and length. This won't take much more time
or effort than an online fitting and you will end up with some truly
affordable custom fit golf clubs. Having the right shaft
can have one of the biggest impacts on your score. To have
truly affordable custom fit golf clubs in your bag, you must have the
right shaft. When it comes to fitting and choosing a
golf club shaft, I highly recommend using the
Maltby Playability Factor (MPF) Shaft Selector.
This helps determine 4 shaft characteristics and narrows down the
possible shafts for your swing dramatically. - It
determines the proper flex for your swing.
- It
takes into consideration whether you are seeking more distance, more
control, or both.
- It takes into account your
preferred trajectory.
- It will help you correct
some swing deficiencies.
Again, I am going to recommend
using the Maltby
Playability Factor (MPF) when selecting golf
component heads. This will help you narrow down the vast
selection of heads to a select few which will help you with your
game. It takes into account things like: - Vertical
Center of Gravity
- Horizontal Center of Gravity
- Moment of Inertia
Using a
points system, it places each golf component head into a specific
category. You can then choose heads from the category which
best describes your game. It is true that if you have the
wrong sized grip you will tend to pull or push the ball a little
more. I like to start out taking a couple of hand
measurements and see what is the recommended size, but I only use that
as a starting point. To really get a good
grip fit, I always have people hold a real club and visually inspect
their grip before making a grip size recommendation. There is a long standing myth
involved with golf club lengths, and that is that the taller the person
the longer their clubs need to be. The reality is that many
times a taller person also has longer arms and therefore longer clubs
could actually hurt their game. Again, I
like to take some measurements, but only use those as a starting point
for fitting length. Your stance is going to have a large
effect on the correct golf club length for you.
This
really is the quickest best way to have affordable custom fit golf
clubs.
