How to Determine the Correct
Length Golf Club "Dynamically"
To determine the correct length golf club for your swing you are going
to have to go to the driving range and hit some balls. First
you will want to pick up some "impact decals" to place on your club
face. By the way, you will be hitting a driver and a #5 iron
to find the correct length golf club, so make sure you get impact
decals for both woods and irons. Now, lets assume that you have
done a static fitting for length and you have determined that you need
a driver 44.5 inches long. This is only a starting point for
determining the length of golf club for you. Go
to the driving range and see if they have a demo club that is this
length and, this is very important, the proper flex shaft for
you. If you can't find a driver at the length you need you
may have to purchase a used one and alter the length to suit your needs
here. Length alteration is covered in the alteration section
of this website. You may just decide to use your current
driver, and that's ok because you may not really need a club longer
than standard. Place the impact decals on your driver
and 5 iron. Now, hit 5 or 6 shots with each. If the
impact pattern is very tight and close to the sweet spot on the club,
then you have the proper length golf club. You even have the
option to go to little longer club if you want to try to get more
distance. If you want to, try this
process again with a longer club, and see if the impact pattern stays
the same or becomes scattered. If the pattern becomes
scattered then you need a shorter club. Your
goal is to have the longest club that gives you the tightest impact
pattern around the sweet spot. The length
of golf club you play with has more to do with your ability
to swing consistently than it does with how tall you are or how long
your arms are. The longer the club, the harder it is to hit
the ball on center. If your impact pattern is still
scattered at 1 inch shorter than normal, then I would probably stop
there and take some lessons before you start making your clubs too
short.
