Club Build and Assembly Instructions
When it comes to doing your first custom golf club build, you might be
surprised to learn that the basic procedure for golf club assembly is
quite simple. The tools and supplies needed are fairly basic and
inexpensive, and it doesn't even take very much time. I did my first
custom golf club build in less than half and hour. Once you have
learned the process, you should be able to build an entire set in about
an hour.
The basic process for golf club building is outlined below. Each step
links to a new page to expand on that topic. I will walk you through
the entire process using a #5 iron as an example.
The first step in a custom golf club build is to get organized. You
need to have all of your components purchased and in hand before
getting started.
There are also a few basic tools and supplies that you will need as
well. These are relatively inexpensive and the tools are a one time
purchase.
Although most heads these days come ready to assemble, it is a good
practice to inspect them to make sure you will get a good bond with the
shaft, and that you will end up with a pleasant appearance with the
ferrule.
The club you are building will determine the shaft length which will
determine how much you need to trim off the tip of the shaft. You will
need to consult a chart provided in the catalog for your particular
shaft, and trim off the amount stated in the chart.
You will need to abrade the shaft tip in order to get a good bond
between the shaft, epoxy, and head.
Now is the time to mix the high impact epoxy (if you're using a
graphite shaft you need to make sure that you have graphite shafting
epoxy).
Although, the ferrule has no impact on the performance of the club, it
does sort of make or break the look of the club. If not done properly,
your golf club assembly will not appear professional.
You need to make sure that the shaft is fully seated in the head. There
are a couple of different ways to do this.
Again, this is purely a cosmetic step in the process. But it will
separate you from the rest of the pack if it is done properly.
You will need to consult a club length chart to determine how long your
club should be.
The final step in your custom golf club build. Installing grips is
really easy, but you do want to be careful to get the alignment right.
Finished!! You have just built YOUR own custom
golf club!!
I hope you have had a great golf club building experience!
