5- Golf Club Epoxy - Choose
the Right One for YOU
There are several different types of golf club epoxy from which to
choose. Your choice will depend on your skill and confidence
level in assembling golf clubs. The main
differences in each type of golf epoxy are the set/gel times and the
cure times. One golf club epoxy will have a 5 minute set/gel
time while another will have an 8 hour set/gel time. Cure
times will vary as well, from 5 minutes to 24 hours. Is
there a strength difference between the different epoxies?
Depends on who you talk to. Some will say that there is no
difference at all or that it is minimal. Some will say that
the faster set and cure times result in a weaker bond which could lead
to a flying golf head. What do I
say? I don't take any chances. I only use a epoxy with a cure time of 24 hrs. I have never been in a
situation where I needed a club to be ready to play within 90
minutes. There are a couple of situations
that will determine which epoxy you will use. - Beaded
Epoxy: If you have a rather loose fit between your shaft and
hosel, then you will want to use Beaded Epoxy. The ultra tiny
beads will help center the shaft in the hosel and fill the void between
them.
- Graphite Epoxy: If you are using
a graphite shaft, you will need Graphite Shafting Epoxy. It
is designed to take some of the stress off of the tip of the graphite
shaft.
 I
usually buy the epoxy in cartridge form rather than by the bottle due
to ease of use. I use a scrap piece of cardboard to mix it up
on, and I stir the 2 parts together with either a popsicle stick or
even an old tee. Make
sure you thoroughly mix the two parts together. This is
another reason I use an epoxy with a longer set/gel time. I
don't want to rush the mixing process, or any part of building the club
for that matter. The last thing I want is for a client of
mine to have their clubhead come flying off at impact. That
doesn't make a very good impression.
You are now ready to
move on to step 6.
