Aiming Your Golf Shaft Spine
in the Right Direction

A golf shaft spine is actually a byproduct of the manufacturing process.  It is virtually impossible to manufacture a shaft without one, at least not without paying an arm and a leg for it.

A spine will run down the full length of a shaft.  To visualize this, take a piece of paper (8½ x 11) and roll it up.  The edge of the paper on the outside of the roll running lengthwise would be the spine.

A shaft may actually have several spines.  The process I will go through here will help you identify the dominant spine plane.

In order to find the spine on a shaft you will need a spine finder.  A spine finder is not much more than a tube with a couple of bearings mounted in both ends, and then a loose third bearing to bend the shaft with.

To find the spine a shaft would be inserted into the spine finder with the tip end of the shaft sticking out the farthest.  Place the third bearing over the tip, maybe 3 inches down the spine, and pull down on the bearing bending the shaft.

Rotate the shaft in the bearings with one hand while holding the bearing with the other.  When you let go of the shaft, it will rotate to its neutral bending position or NBP.  If you are pulling straight down on the shaftSpine Align with the loose bearing, the NBP will be on the top of the shaft.  The spines of the shaft will usually be about 90º from the NBP.

Once the spines are marked, you can now proceed to build your clubs.  Spine placement will be very important in making your clubs very consistent.

There is some dispute as to the proper position of the spine as it relates to the clubhead.  There is one thing, however, that all clubmakers will agree on, and that is put the spine in the same position on all of your clubs within a set.  That will give you the most consistency.

Some clubmakers will tell you to point the golf shaft spine toward the target when you are at address.  Some will point it toward the toe.  I tend to point it toward the toe so as to reduce any toe droop that might occur during the swing.

Like I said before, just make sure you place the spine in the same position on all of your clubs for the most consistancy.
