3- Golf Shaft Tip Trimming
Tip trimming needs to be done exactly to the
manufacturer's specifications or you will void any warranties that came
with the shaft. Don't worry, even though it is an important part
of your custom golf club build, it's really not that difficult as I
will show you below. Again, I will refer
to the Golfworks catalog for our trimming
instructions. In my opinion, Golfworks has the simplest
system to understand. Even when I purchase components from
another company, I will refer to the Golfworks catalog for the golf
shaft tip trimming instructions. Flip to the page
that lists the recommended shaft for our club, the FST Pro Black
Lite. The current 2007 catalog lists it on page
222. Note the following chart. I have highlighted
the two values that are most important to us right now.

- Flex = R/S (R=Regular, S=Stiff)
- Trim Code = IR2/IR11
Remember,
R corresponds to IR2 and S corresponds to IR11. The
fitting process will tell you which shaft flex you need. For
our example, we are going to use the Regular shaft flex so our trim
code will be IR2. Next, we will refer to
the shaft trimming instructions currently on page 173.
This section lists any additional instructions or special
considerations to apply. After reviewing this page we find
that there are no special consideration for the FST Pro Black Lite, so
we can move on to the next step. Turning to the next
page we see the golf shaft tip trimming charts.
From
the chart we see that for trim code IR2 for a #5 Iron we need to trim 2
inches off the tip of the shaft. Measure
up 2 inches from the small end of the shaft and mark it with a magic
marker. You may want to put a piece of masking tape on the
shaft first, and then put your mark on the tape.
Now
using the pipe cutter, cut the shaft on your mark. Remember,
if you are cutting a graphite shaft, you need to make sure you are
using cutting wheels designed for cutting graphite. Remove
any sharp edges or burrs with some sandpaper.
You
are now ready to move on to step 4.
