How to Improve Your Golf Game

How do you improve your golf game?  Everyone wants to know how to improve their golf Game.  "If I could just figure out this one little thing...."  Therein lies the problem.

There is no "one little quick fix" that will improve your golf game.  Everyone pretty much understands that practice will help their game.  Practice makes perfect right?  Well, not entirely.

There are actually 6 things you need to do in order to have maximum game improvement.  The first two or three I am sure you already understand.  The last three or four may need a little explaining.

  1. Practice
  2. Lessons from a Professional Instructor
  3. Play
  4. Physical fitness
  5. A good mental game
  6. Equipment that has been fit to your game

I truly believe that each one of these is equally as important as the other.  If you want to improve your game to maximum extent, you need to do all six things.

Some of you might ask, "Isn't playing the same as practicing?"  I don't think so.  When you are practicing on a range, you tend to work on the same shot over and over.  When you are playing a round, every shot is different than the one before it.

Some people will try to practice the way that they play.  They will go to the range, hit the first ball with a driver, the second with a five iron, and then the third with a wedge.  They practice just as if they were playing on the course.

I personally don't feel this is an effective way of practicing.  You might just as well be playing a round.  The tour pros don't practice this way, so I wouldn't either.

Special Note:  One thing to remember is that, in general, men and women play differently.  Women golfers swing differently than men do, and there are many good tips on how ladies should approach the game.

Another way to improve your golf game, is to take lessons from a golf professional.  Many people try to avoid this by reading golf magazines and trying to diagnose their own swing problems, or listening to their friends on the course, (who aren't much better themselves).  All of this usually ends up either confusing the golfer or, worse yet, making their game worse than it was before.

To improve your golf game you need to take lessons.  Everyone can benefit from a professional golf instructor.  Even Tiger Woods has his own personal golf coach.

Physical fitness is often neglected as a way to improve your golf game.  I am not saying you need to pump iron and look like Mr. (or Miss) Universe.  What I am saying is that you need to have a regular exercise and stretching routine.  This will reduce the risk of injury, and you will be stronger which will translate into hitting the ball further.

You must also have a good mental game.  Many people will say that you need to have a positive attitude and then turn around and think to themselves "boy I hope I don't hit the ball into that pond".  That's not positive thinking.

Now, just as important as all of the rest of this is properly fit golf equipment.  Who needs custom fit golf clubs?  If you want to improve your golf game then you do.  It has been estimated that 80-90% of golfers do not realize the importance of having properly fit clubs.

I certainly didn't when I bought my first set of clubs.  I admit that they were low end clubs but I just figured I needed to learn how to play first.  Once I learned more about golf club specs and how to measure them, I was disgusted with these clubs.  The lie angles not only were incrementally inconsistent, but some of them were incremented in the wrong direction!  That was just one of their many problems

That is what this website is all about.  It will teach you how and why you need to be custom fit, and how to do it yourself.  You will learn how to check your current clubs and make any necessary adjustments, and how to build new clubs from components.   You will definitely improve your golf game.
