Golf Clubhead Fitting Using Maltby
MPF Ratings
The Maltby MPF Ratings are quite literally changing the way golf club
manufacturers are designing clubs. Since Ralph Malby's book
came out in 2005 detailing the Maltby MPF Ratings, the major golf club
manufacturers MPF rated clubs of 501+ (Game Improvement) or better have
increased from about 33% to over 70%. Mr.
Maltby uses several physical characteristics of a clubhead in order to
come up with the Playability Factor of that
club. - The clubheads
horizontal Center of Gravity (CG)
- The
clubheads vertical CG
- The clubheads Moment
of Inertia (MOI)
- The clubheads rearward
CG
Running these numbers through a
formula he has developed yields the Maltby Playability Factor
(MPF). He has categorized these numbers as the
table below has shown.
| MPF Points | MPF Category | Description | | 851 + | Ultra Game Improvement | For all golfers - Ideal for higher handicap
golfers. Ultra designs are lower center of gravity and
enhanced forgiveness and an extremely solid feel. |
| 701-850 | Super Game Improvement | For better golfers - Better suited for mid to
high handicappers. While still highly forgiving, these
designs are more sensitive to smaller changes in swing and ball contact. |
| 551-700 | Game Improvement | For more expert golfers - "Game" designs are
notable for their classic features, yet still maintain some higher
playability characteristics than are associated with more traditional
styles. | | 401-550 | Conventional | Only for the best golfers - Popular iron design
category for tournament pros who play muscleback blades. |
| 251-400 | Classic | Difficult to play - Still used by some
tournament pros. | | 0-250 | Player Classic | Not recommended - Very few if any tournament
pros still play clubs in this category. |
I would not recommend anyone buy or
play anything below the "Game Improvement" category. If
you are a scratch golfer I would choose something in the "Game
Improvement" Category. These clubs will give you more of the
feel you may be looking for while still giving you good playability If
you are a mid to high handicapper, choose something in the "Super Game
Improvement" category. These clubs are very forgiving, but
will still be sensitive to swing changes while you work on your game. If
you are a high handicapper who doesn't get to play nearly as often as
you would like, then definitely choose something in the "Ultra Game
Improvement" Category. These offer the most forgiveness so that you
will enjoy the game much more. In his book "The
Maltby Playability Factor", Mr. Maltby lists over 300 different clubs
and places each one of them into an MPF Category. He lists
all of the major manufacturers such as Nike, Cobra, Ping, etc., along
with the best component manufacturers such as Golfsmith, Golfworks,
KZG, and Wishon. The Maltby MPF Ratings
are the only proven scientific system to accurately compare the
playability of different sets of clubs. The next step
