Grip Weighted Golf Clubs
Grip or butt weighting golf clubs are not the ideal way to go.
All that you really do is "fool" the swingweight scale into a lower
reading. The problem is that
while the club will measure lower on the swingweight scale, it will
also have a higher total weight. Generally speaking, this
will slow down your swing speed, which in turn will result in shorter
distances. Also, the club to club total weight
increment will not be consistant. Remember, consistency from
club to club is really what we are shooting for. There
are, however, occasions when you might want to butt weight your golf
clubs. For instance, maybe you have a very high swing speed
but very little control. Adding to your total weight on the
grip end of the club might slow down your swing enough to regain some
control.
To
add weight to the grip end, you will need some butt weight
ports. You will need to epoxy these into the grip end of the
shaft. Next, you can fill the ports with either
tungsten or lead powder. On the grip end of the club, it
takes 4 grams of weight to lower the swingweight of the club by 1
point. You may also want to add some epoxy to the powder to
keep it from rattling around. Don't
forget to take into consideration the weight of the grips and grip tape
when estimating how much powder to add.
