What Size Golf Grip Do You
Need?
Determining what size golf grip you need depends on a couple of
factors. First, it depends on the size of your hands, and
secondly, it depends on how you hold your club. Many
places will determine what size golf grip you need just by taking a
couple of measurements on your hand. This can get you close
to what you need, but it will also depend on how you hold the
club. The reason that you might not end
up with the right grip size is because of the way that you stand when
you address the ball. The angle between your arms and the
golf club shaft have an effect on how the club will sit in the palm of
your hand. The larger the angle the
larger your golf grip size may need to be. The smaller the
angle the smaller your golf grip size may need to be.
Measurements don't take into account how you hold your club. You
can go to your local golf shop and they will usually have different
sized grips on some cutoff shafts that you can try. Try each
one out as if standing at address. This
can be somewhat difficult to do because you don't have a real club in
your hand, but do your best to stand exactly the same way you would at
address. Whenever I fit someone I use a real club
because I believe it gives more accurate results. Once
you're in position, you can let go with your non-gloved hand.
Now, with your gloved hand, look to see how your fingertips are
positioned relative to your palm. They should be either just
barely touching, or no more than 1/8th inch away. If
they are digging into your palm then you need a larger grip.
If they are more than 1/8th away, then you need a smaller grip As
far as what material and style of grip to get, it is all about personal
feel. Get something that just feels comfortable in your hands. The
last step in my Basic Fitting Process is Length
Fitting.
